Let me show you some approaches to get your jazz guitar playing up to speed.

What are some tips for getting a jazz guitar sound?
1) Arpeggios. Landing on the right chord tone at the right time is one approach that typical guitar players can learn to get them closer to the jazz guitar sound. This is called chord tone soloing.
2) Tension. Creating tension over a dominant chord and it's resolution chord are part of the hallmark of jazz music. The 2 5 1 (ii v i) is in almost every jazz song, and understanding how to treat these chords is paramount. The altered scale, diminished and others help you get that jazz sound.
3) Swing. Joe pass, Wes Montgomery, and George Benson could swing! This fundamental feel is the hallmark of so many jazz tunes. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. This is a very basic but very important aspect that is often overlooked. Getting your rhythm together, and have great timing is so important to jazz guitar.

Yes! Grant green basically played pentatonic. His tone, is touch, timing, and superimposition of notes is what gave him a jazz sound. It's a trick. And it's one I can teach you.
